Providing ADA-Compliant Signage in Lancaster County, PA
ADA-compliant signage provides wayfinding information to persons with disabilities–the blind, visually impaired, and mobility impaired. As part of the legislation passed in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) established guidelines for signage required for compliance. Businesses with ten or more employees must comply with the Act.
ADA signage communicates that your place of business accommodates persons with a disability. Businesses utilizing ADA-compliant wayfinding signage create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.
Where are ADA Signs Required?
The ADA directs where compliant signs must be placed and also establishes the design standards of the signs. Permanent rooms and spaces require ADA-compliant signage:
Restrooms | Utility Rooms | Exits |
Meeting Rooms | Classrooms | Stairs |
Conference Rooms | Common Rooms | Floor Number |
Within these rooms and spaces, there are also requirements for the positioning and mounting heights of the ADA-compliant signs.
ADA-compliant signage is not required in the following instances:
Directional signs | Informational Signs | Open Hour Signs |
Elevator Signs | Employee Only Signs | Refuge Signs |

Design Specifications for ADA-Compliant Signage
In addition to where ADA-compliant signage must be placed, the ADA also establishes design specifications for signage. These design specifications include:
- Finish and contrast – There must be adequate contrast between the letters and the background (at least 70%). The background should be a non-glare finish.
- Letter styling – Attention to font specifications must be adhered to (i.e., only sans serif fonts, letter proportions, character height, character spacing, and line spacing).
- Braille and Tactile Characters – Specifications for height, shape, and location of Braille and tactile characters are defined by the ADA.
